Kroger is adding smart screens to 500 of its stores across the U.S., in an expanded partnership with Cooler Screens.

The announcement follows the success of a three-year pilot Kroger conducted with Cooler Screens’ technology, to enhance the in-store experience using interactive screens and merchandising.

The screens will replace doors in the refrigerated aisles, displaying product information in front of refrigerated products and allowing grocers to promote deals and special offers. A system of sensors and cameras is used to identify stock levels, with information displayed adapting in response to changing availability.

By displaying information about the products for sale, shoppers can make better-informed purchases based on the needs of their diet, lifestyle and budget, according to Kroger.

“We’re excited about this continued collaboration as it extends our vision for the future of retail media, offering brands another powerful marketing lever inside the store,” said Cara Pratt, Kroger’s precision marketing senior vice president.

Cooler Screens has estimated that its advertising platform reaches more than 90 million monthly viewers across multiple retailers nationwide and is projected to reach more than 200 million monthly viewers in early 2024.

The company’s smart screens are already used by Walgreens, which began testing the technology in 2018 and rolled it out to thousands of stores in 2020.
