Robotic eye surgery startup ForSight Robotics has completed its series A funding round with a total investment of $55 million to advance its robotic surgical platform ORYOM.

Named after the Hebrew word for “daylight,” ORYOM would be the first platform of its kind to offer an entirely robotic cataract surgery. It uses microsurgical robotics, computer visualization and machine learning and has already been successfully used in multiple cataract procedures on an animal eye model by a number of ophthalmic surgeons.

According to ForSight, ORYOM shows 10 times the accuracy of human surgeons doing the same procedure.

The funds raised will be used to accelerate ORYOM through clinical trials, and allow ForSight to expand its platform’s offerings to treat a wider range of retinal diseases, such as glaucoma. The company also hopes to bring these procedures to people with typically limited health care access; tackling this current disparity.

“Our goal is to democratize this highly sophisticated procedure,” said ForSight CEO Dr. Daniel Glozman. “…Enabling patients around the world to easily access the treatment that can restore their vision.”

The latest funding round was led by the Adani Group, alongside existing investors Eclipse Ventures and Mithril Capital. A number of new investors, including Provenio Capital, Precision Capital, Reiya Ventures and the Ljungstrom family office. Other prominent private investors also joined the round.
