Hewlett Packard Enterprise is a leading provider of edge computing technology and is now creating more holistic offerings. In May, the company announced the launch of the HPE Universal Internet of Things (IoT) Platform, which is vendor-agnostic.
GE has developed a cloud-based platform known as Predix that could have an array of industrial applications. Last month, the firm announced a partnership with Oracle to help the company link its industrial systems to the Internet.
Amazon has launched a dedicated IoT cloud known as AWS IoT that supports billions of devices and trillions of messages. Recently, Salesforce announced that it was building an IoT cloud build on Amazon’s technology.
Apple is the odd company out on this list in that it is IoT offerings are the most consumer-targeted. The company is a trailblazer in terms of both wearables and the smart home. Its Apple Watch may not be the blockbuster the product had hoped for, but it is still one of the most popular wearable devices. It also has an established home automation technology—HomeKit.
The Redmond, WA–based company operates one of the most platforms—the Azure IoT Suite. The company recently debuted Windows 10 IoT Core. The company recently bolstered its IoT division through the acquisition of the Italian company Solair.
Intel recently announced its decision to cease its plans for Atom mobile SoCs to redirect its focus on the IoT and cloud markets. The company’s Atom platform is used by customers like Microsoft (in its HoloLens platform) and the connected car niche.
A trailblazer in the field of cognitive computing, IBM has launched a dedicated IoT platform for its famed Watson technology. The company Connected Lab is hosting a Hackathon powered by IBM Watson IoT to spur the development of novel conversational interfaces.
Cisco is banking its future on the IoT. It estimates that 50 billion devices will be online by 2020 but, last year stated that some 99% of objects weren’t connected. To facilitate the transition, the company has developed a so-called IoT System. Earlier this year, the firm expanded its IoT portfolio through the $1.4 billion purchase of Jasper Technologies
Whether it’s self-driving cars, Nest, or its Android-based IoT development platform known as Brillo, perhaps no other company has as many connections to the IoT as does Google.
It was telling that a full 20% of survey participants declared that no company was the leader in the IoT market. Perhaps it is too early to tell. In our recent survey “IoT Awareness and Implementation,” we were curious what one company IoT end users considered to be the absolutely, positively indisputable leader in the IoT space. (In a separate question, we asked our audience to cite the most important overall players, letting participants choose up to five IoT companies from a list of 27.) Considering the diverse background of or survey respondents and the various market and technology focus of the players within the IoT space, the list of companies nominated to be the single IoT leader was long and diverse.
