Confidence in the ability for connected technology to drive value is growing.

That was the message in the opening keynote presentation at IoT World Silicon Valley being held this week in Santa Clara, California.

The presentation by Josh Builta, director of research analyst firm Omdia, focused on the Internet of Things landscape.

Builta cited a survey in which more than 60% of 13,000 IoT decision makers expressed more confidence in connected technology’s ability to derive operational value than 14 months ago, compared to 4% who said the reverse.

In the standing-room-only conference presentation, Builta highlighted IoT’s capabilities among enterprises amid the pandemic.

“We have drones delivering medical supplies and autonomous machines helping with sanitisation efforts,” Built said. “Remote monitoring of equipment has become essential for many companies and industries.”

Builta, who leads the artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT analyst team at Omdia, was also bullish on the opportunity for high-bandwidth connectivity options such as 5G for IoT in years ahead.

“The impact opportunity of IoT on 5G has been limited to date, but we certainly see room for adoption now, all of which is laying the ground for the continued growth of the IoT ecosystem for years to come,” he said.
