5G in Manufacturing Shows Promise, but Rollouts Are Incremental

While 5G in manufacturing is poised for breakout, it may take time to take hold.

That’s partly because it will take some time for the infrastructure to be built out to enable 5G deployments, but also because the manufacturing sector needs to adjust to the standard.

In this video discussion with IoT World Today, Ali Syed Moshin discusses the recent Omdia report “5G in Manufacturing -i5G Report -2020.” The report notes that 5G brings myriad possibilities to manufacturing environments, but there is still work to be done to make adoption more widespread.

According to Moshin, 5G in manufacturing presents several compelling possibilities, including the ability to develop private networks, which enables manufacturers to run their own networks and have greater control. Ease of deployment of 5G networks and real-time data transfer are additional boons for 5G in manufacturing.

There are some challenges to deployment in the near term. Check out our discussion of 5G in manufacturing below:

5G in manufacturing can be costly. Wireless technologies can be 20% more expensive than wired technologies, said Moshin, according to one survey.

Cellular technology expertise and competency may be sparse as well. Use cases are still emerging but a continued barrier.

In this video, learn more about how 5G in manufacturing will take shape. For the entire report, on 5G in manufacturing, click here. And for more coverage on IIoT, take part in Industrial IoT World this December! Learn more and register here.
