Building operators are ready to start deploying automated products that will steeply slash their energy consumption, says a government official.

Steven T. Bushby, leader of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology’s mechanical systems and controls group, says 800 companies worldwide are making products to improve buildings’ energy footprint.

“We can now interconnect building systems with an emerging smart grid,' Bushby recently told a gathering at The Energy Times Executive Briefing in Washington.

Homes and commercial buildings use three-quarters of America’s electric power.  “We are creating the groundwork that enables large scale changes in the way that we all operate and do business,” he said.
