For all of the changes elevators have undergone in the past century and a half, their basic function has remained fixed — a single elevator car travels up or down in an elevator shaft. The firm PLP Architecture is looking to change this with its concept of a SkyPod, which can make greater use of space by traveling in three dimensions and by allowing multiple pods to travel along the same unidirectional looped pathway. The architecture firm behind the project compares the project to a gyroscope as the SkyPod track can turn and twist enabling it to traverse the curved contours of some buildings.
