Google, Accenture Help Create 5G AR Experience at Marvel Stadium
Google, Accenture and Telstra have collaborated to create a 5G-powered AR wayfinding experience at the Marvel football Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
The project is set to launch ahead of next year’s football season.
The virtual experience was showcased at Google’s I/O developer conference earlier this month, and combines Telstra’s 5G capabilities with Google’s Cloud platform and machine learning ARCore Geospatial API to give visitors a virtual experience that includes interactions with virtual brands and digital characters, as well as directions to their seats and other wayfinding features.
Google trekker devices were used to create a metric model of the stadium, with GPS readings then matched with 360-degree images using the ARCore Geospatial API.
Telstra Group executive for products and technology Kim Krogh Andersen said the project is an important step in making Marvel one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the world. In support of this mission, Telstra previously worked with the Australian Football League (AFL) to boost 5G connectivity at the site for applications such as AI, in-stadium streaming and player performance tracking.
“Google Cloud’s technology will underpin next-generation 5G capabilities, transforming the way people interact with the physical environment around them,” said Alister Dias, VP of Australia & New Zealand for Google Cloud. “Not only will it make it easier to explore the grounds at Marvel Stadium, but it also has huge potential to create more immersive and interactive experiences for fans.”
“This is only the beginning of how cloud-powered 5G AR wayfinding solutions can be used to enhance in-person experiences for all Australians,” Dias added.
Telstra has already hinted that 5G capabilities may be deployed to drive value creation and user experience in a range of other settings in the future, including hospitals, shopping centers and airports.
