Smart Window Technology to Transform New Boston Development

View’s smart windows will be used in the Hood Park Life Science Innovation Campus

The new Hood Park Life Science Innovation Campus in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston promises to be on the cutting edge of smart technology, and that extends to its windows.

View Inc., a California-based smart building technology company, recently announced its smart windows will be installed at 100 Hood Park drive, a seven-story spec office and laboratory building. The 150,000 square-foot office and lab building is a key component of the multi-building life science and technology hub developed by Trademark at the former H.P. Hood dairy plant in Charlestown.

View Smart Windows automatically adjust to control heat and glare without the need for blinds. The View technology anticipates the sun’s movements and continuously adjusts tint levels based on glare, heat and daylight.

Perhaps most importantly for a life sciences building like that at Hood Park, where sterile work environments are a must, the smart windows eliminate the need for blinds and the associated dust and germs they bring. In addition, View Smart Windows can tint on demand from a mobile device, helping to provide privacy and protect intellectual property, while also enabling a wide variety of workspace configurations, including those with workstations in front of the windows.

“The life science sector is booming – and smart, healthy and sustainable workspaces are key to attracting and retaining top talent,” said Brian Klansky, View’s vice president.

Some of those health benefits, according to View, include reduced eye strain and headaches. They also point to a recent study they said found that employees working in rooms with View Smart Windows slept 37 minutes longer each night, and performed better on cognitive tests.

In addition to health benefits, View also claims the smart windows can reduce air conditioning and lighting costs by up to 20%.

Mark Rosenshein, a partner with Trademark Partners, said the company is excited to bring the benefits of View Smart Windows to 100 Hood Park Drive.

“We designed the entire Hood Park campus to optimize occupant health, comfort, and productivity, helping our tenants attract top talent in the area,” Rosenshein said. “The health benefits of increased access to natural light and outdoor views made View Smart Windows the logical choice for the Hood Park project.”
