The Winter Olympics Curling events start Friday bringing IoT tech right to the sport with a robotic curling coach.

The robot, designed by inventors at the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), helps teams refine plays on the ice using a combination of AI, image recognition and an automatic control system. It can simulate the curling throwing process, while also helping athletes understand possible game situations before they happen.

The robot was launched in 2019 at the Curling Artificial Intelligence Challenge held at HIT. Developed by the Department of Control Science and Engineering with the latest AI and robot technology, the robotic coach will be unveiled at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Ahead of the Olympic games, developers from HIT demonstrated the robots, which also competed in curling competitions against professional athletes to show off their skills.
