Ten Smart City Projects That Highlight Diversity
As more cities look for ways to upgrade aging infrastructure, smart city projects are popping up around the globe. Smart city initiatives are poised to drive more than $189 billion in spending in 2023, according to IDC.
To date, there is already tremendous variability in smart city projects, which aim to do everything from optimize traffic to improve public safety. Priority projects align with categories that cities are already allocating funds to, including smart grid, video surveillance, advanced public transportation, smart lighting and intelligent traffic management.
Many smart city projects, however, remain experimental. This report takes a look at 10 smart cities that have made an impact already, including:
- Columbus, Ohio’s Smart Columbus Operating System which uses data to limit spending and identify and reduce traffic and pedestrian fatalities
- Jinhua China’s transport system that allows bus riders to use facial recognition to pay
- Berkeley County, South Carolina’s smart water meters that provide more accurate meter readings and improved efficiency
