The Difficulty of Managing Internet of Things Security Spend

Allocating Internet of Things security spending wasn’t straightforward to begin with, but the hype around blockchain and quantum computing raises new questions.
  • Written by Brian Buntz
  • 11th October 2018

The Mirai botnet in 2016 served as a rallying cry that many Internet of Things had practically no security features built in. But between then and now, there have been relatively few comparable headline-grabbing, IoT-related security stories. Are there a flood of attacks that have simply been unreported? Or was the initial assessment about the scope of the IoT security problem exaggerated? Coming to a firm understanding of IoT security can be elusive, making it difficult for organizations to assess how many resources to allot to address the problem. Here, we take a look at the current state of IoT security and offer recommendations for organizations to understand and address the cyber risk their IoT projects can pose.

This report also assesses:

  • Blockchain’s potential for IoT security and why its cybersecurity potential is unlikely to live up to its hype in the short term.
  • The looming threat of quantum computing to render many common encryption algorithms obsolete in coming years and what that mean for IoT deployments.
